The earthquake and tsunami that struck Samoa recently has had a devastating effect for animals and humans.  While people mourn the deaths of their loved ones, struggle to find shelter for their families, and try to put their lives back together again, the animals are struggling to fend for themselves.

We have had teams on the ground in both American Samoa and Western Samoa.

Our team in American Samoa reports that with entire villages reduced to rubble, the places that animals found food, water and shelter are gone.  Many of the surviving animals have been contaminated with oil, antifreeze, raw sewage, and solid waste.  And because no veterinary services are available on-island, American Samoa is ill equipped to provide even the most basic care for these victims.  Approximately 9,100 families live along the coastline of Tutuila and nearly one third of those were affected by the tsunami.

Two thousand people have been relocated into shelters. Their companion animals remain in the affected areas. This relief operation will  not only directly aid the animals left in the wake of the tsunami by treating their wounds, ensuring their welfare and helping to stop the spread of disease, but it will also aim to help all the animals of American Samoa, both now and in the future, by providing humane education to our island’s population.

If help doesn’t come, many of the animals left behind will die. Visit http://www.wspa.org.nz/news.asp?newsID=542 to learn about ways which you can help WSPA relieve the suffering of animals in Samoa, as well as worldwide.
